Our podiatrists are able to skillfully and carefully remove the spike, nail edge or dry skin causing ingrown toenails. After all, we do see plenty of these and are sufficiently equipped with the right tools that are clinically sterilised for the job. It is often less painful and more effective when treatment is done by the right podiatrist.
Fungal Nail Treatment
What is it?
Fungal nail disease, or onychomycosis, is infection by fungi that causes thickening, discolouration and staining of the nail plate. It occurs when fungi invades nails that have been damaged by shoes, trauma or sporting activity. Fungus often grows at the end of the nail plate and continues to spread underneath, forming white chalky plaques on the nail surface. As the infection progresses, yellowish and brownish discolouration may start to occur. Further cell damage by the fungus to the foot of the nail can also cause the nail to thicken and change in shape. This infection is contagious and may result in pain, discomfort and a lowered self-esteem.
How is it treated?
During your appointment, we may require trimming and thinning of nails so as to better physically remove fungal spore areas, as well as to enable medication to penetrate the nail. Anti-fungal topical medicament, available at The Sole Clinic must be applied daily. This will help to cure the infected nail, while preventing the infection from spreading to neighbouring nails. Such treatment can be required for up to 12 months or longer.
Currently, the most commonly used methods of treatment for fungal nails are oral medications or laser treatment. However, oral medication may pose significant side effects on the liver. Laser treatment has also been reported to be painful.
At The Sole Clinic, we have brought in PACT® Nail Fungus Therapy, the latest state-of-the-art light therapy treatment for fungal nails. This painless method is extremely effective with no adverse side effects, unlike oral medication.
